Understanding human
rights
Scripture is authoritative in that it is identity shaping.
There is no concept of “basic human rights” in the bible. This
is an Enlightenment concept and while some of them have Judeo-Christian roots,
the bible itself does not have any concept of human rights the way that we do
today.
Daniel Lowe
The only human right we have concerning the Bible is the
right to read it, and that right comes from the US constitution. The Bible dictates
what we can and cannot do as children of God, not what we have the right to do.
So, if you are of a religion, I believe you should give more credence to the
constitution than you give to the Bible, Koran or Torah, otherwise you have no
rights and you are nothing more than a slave to your religion. Just remember,
the next time you demand your right to religious freedom, you won't get an
answer from God; you will find the answer in the Bill of Rights and the
constitution.
